Living Room Cupboard – Part 5

So, my Dad saw my last post about the living room cupboard, and my dilemma about the plywood edge. He told me to buy a piece of ¾” pine, stain it to match the plywood, and glue or nail it to the plywood edge. Problem solved! The ¾” pine he’s talking about comes in ¾” x ⅜” x 6′ strips – it’s what I used to build my DIY spice rack, add a border to the original cat platform, and add treads to the cat ramp fail.

Living Room Cupboard – Part 4

As of my last update, the cupboard was painted white, but the dark blue laminate top had to go. Instead of replacing it, I decided to try creating a new top, out of stained plywood, which would slide over the existing top. So Thursday morning I headed over to the hardware store and bought a fancy piece of ¾” thick plywood. I had them cut it to the exact size of the existing top.

House Numbers!

A few months ago I came home from work to find the building-wide fire alarm blaring. It’s L·O·U·D and comes out of multiple speakers throughout the condo. There’s no way to shut it off without calling the fire department. Apparently the alarm was tripped by work being done in the 3rd condo. And no one was home, so who knows how long it was going off – poor cats!

Living Room Cupboard – Part 3

Last weekend I put 2 coats of white paint on the cupboard. It’s the same paint used on all the trim in the condo. I have no idea what brand or color it is – I found it in the basement when I moved in and the label was completely covered in paint. I found lots of unlabeled paint cans in the basement when I moved in, which are now properly labeled and organized *nods*.

Living Room Cupboard – Part 2

Last week I primed the living room cupboard base and doors with Stix primer. However, after two coats, I noticed the doors were showing streaks of yellow through the primer. Which made me worried that the stain was coming through. So, since my motto is “when in doubt, BIN”, I re-primed the cupboard and doors with 2 coats of Zinsser BIN. No more yellow streaks – BIN FTW! With 4 coats of primer between me and the stain, I should be all set to paint!

Living Room Cupboard – Part 1

Yesterday after work I got a burst of energy and decided to start painting the living room cupboard – something that’s been on my to do list for a long time! I started by taking the doors off and prepping the frame with blue painters tape. Then I spread contractor’s paper on the floor of the girl cave, set up my painters triangles, and got the doors ready for primer.

Kitchen Cupboard – Part 2

As I reported this morning, I was able to get some DIY stuff done over the weekend. And that included putting 2 coats of high-gloss Benjamin Moore Calypso Orange in the glass-front kitchen cupboard! I primed and painted it with a sample of BM Calypso Orange back in March, but their samples only come in Satin finish and I wanted high-gloss.

Back in the Swing of Things

Well, here we are in June, and the last DIY-related thing I did was back in April! Oy! Every weekend I tell myself I’m going to do some DIY stuff, but every weekend comes and goes with no DIY. Lately my weekends look like this: Saturdays are spent relaxing, decompressing from the work week, and re-charging my batteries [aka – reading, napping, walking, and laying on the couch watching TV].

Laundry Room – Part 4

I finally got my act together and painted the last little bit of wall in the laundry room. If you recall from my last laundry room post, I had everything done except a little bit above and around the door. I finished that this morning, which means the room is DONE!
