Kitchen Cupboard – Part 1

We’ve decided to paint the inside of our glass-front kitchen cupboard.  This was hubby’s idea, and I think it’s a brilliant one.  He suggested a bright, bold orange like Benjamin Moore’s Electric Orange, but I decided to go with the slightly more tame BM Calypso Orange:

So last night, after removing the items and the shelves from the cabinet, I used Benjamin Moore Fresh Start primer followed by 2 coats of Calypso Orange:

I think the cabinets are IKEA melamine – and according to the intarwebs, Fresh Start primer will adhere to melamine and provide a decent base for latex paint.  However, I think I should have used BIN sealant/primer just to be sure…  I guess if the paint starts peeling off I’ll know I erred, and redo it using BIN!  But until then, I’m going to wing it.  I am planning to paint the insides of a few more cabinets, so I’ll use BIN to prime those.  I’m not painting the shelves, just the inside back and maybe inside sides of the cabinets.

I was using a Benjamin Moore sample, and samples only come in Satin finish, so the following pics don’t do our vision justice.  I think high-gloss orange would be fantastic.  But until then, here’s a sneak peak of the glass-front cabinet [if you look closely at the 2nd picture you can see Darwin’s tail forming a black question mark]:

Love your cabinets Alison! I’m not brave with the colors like you and I’m pretty low-key when it comes to design, but I applaud your DIY braveness! I love Benjamin Moore paint! Just completed painting the inside of our house (painters did all the work). Went with Stonington Gray in bedroom, kitchen and sunroom and Smokey Taupe everywhere else. Whittier is a great school…my daughters went there. I’ve worked with Jim for years. 🙂
