Another weekend gone with no DIY to show for it. Meh. But, like last weekend, I was still very productive! I don’t know why that’s important, but it is… otherwise I have “OMG I did NOTHING this weekend!” guilt, which plagues me all week. So as I sipped my tea Saturday morning, I thought about all the things I could do.
This is what happens when you come home from work on not just the coldest day of THIS year, but also of LAST year, and find that your husband [with all the best intentions!], has turned the heat down to 50°. In my experience, when it’s 7.7° degrees outside, with a -30° windchill, and you live in a drafty house, you bite the bullet and leave the heat set at around 65° so it’s at least bearable when you get home! Extra money down the drain be damned!
For the first time, like, ever, I’m not traveling for Christmas. Hubby and I are going to spend the day in our pajamas, sprawled on the couch, watching Christmas specials and gorging ourselves on vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner [it was so good at Thanksgiving I’m making it again!]. We usually fly to Florida to spend the holidays with our families [who live about 10 minutes apart in SW Florida]. But this year we flew to Florida early
To be honest, I never thought I’d get married. I fantasized about it abstractly, but never met anyone where it seemed like a good idea. I was perfectly fine/happy/content with being single. I had great hobbies, good friends, lots of Netflix, etc. – I never felt I needed “a man” or “marriage” to make me feel complete. Jim never thought he’d get married either. He’d sort of resigned himself to the fact he’d probably be single forever, and was living a comfortable existence as a bachelor with his cat Darwin.
Yes, this post has nothing to do with DIY and everything to do with hair. And my mother will need to be sitting down for this one. On Sunday my friend Briggs asked me if I was having a hair crisis. Which got me thinking about it, and I decided that yes, I sort of am! And I decided my hair crisis deserved a blog post.
Today marks one year of blogging! In honor of that, I’ve tidied up some old posts, renamed a bunch to help me link back to older projects, and updated the layout to a more streamlined “thumbnail & post excerpt” format.
Last week I stumbled upon the website for Architectural Salvage, Inc. which is only 40 minutes north of us in Exeter, NH. It looks like they have some really awesome stuff, including old wooden doors [need!], reclaimed barn wood [want!], stained glass windows, leaded glass windows, cool hardware, and funky light fixtures. I told hubby we’re going on a roadtrip soon!
Christmas never feels right until the tree is up and decorated. 4 years ago I bought a fake tree at Target on super sale – apparently no one wanted it. But I knew it was perfect the first time I saw it – it’s got pinecones and little red berries on twigs, and fake snow – it’s awesome! It’s tall and narrow, and sort of hard to decorate since the branches are all munched close together. But it’s my tree and I love it.
I started dogsitting/housesitting in 1999 to supplement my income. I was working full time, but the money wasn’t great, so I collaborated with a woman I used to babysit for and together we started a dogsitting business. After a year, she dropped out, but I continued for 11 more years! It was a fun way to earn extra money.
This is my first post, on my very own website! I will be documenting my home improvement projects on our beautiful, sunny condo at the edge of the Ipswich River. Currently, the only power tool I own is a drill, and I’ve never built anything from scratch. But, I have to start somewhere, and I’ve already learned so much by getting my hands dirty over the last few months. Thanks for joining me on my DIY journey!
